Method

Prepare the Onions

  1. 1

    Slice the Onions

Peel the large onions and slice them into 1/4 inch thick rings. Separate the rings and set aside.

Make the Batter

  1. 2

    Mix Dry Ingredients

In a medium bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, cornstarch, baking powder, salt, black pepper, and garlic powder.

  2. 3

    Combine Wet Ingredients

In another bowl, whisk together the buttermilk and egg until well combined.

  3. 4

    Combine Wet and Dry

Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir until just combined. Be careful not to overmix; a few lumps are okay.

Fry the Onion Rings

  1. 5

    Heat the Oil

In a large pot or deep fryer, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C).

  2. 6

    Coat the Onion Rings

Dip each onion ring into the batter, allowing any excess to drip off before carefully placing them in the hot oil.

  3. 7

    Fry the Rings

Fry the onion rings in batches, being careful not to overcrowd the pot. Fry for about 2-3 minutes on each side or until golden brown.

  4. 8

    Drain and Season

Remove the fried onion rings with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels. Sprinkle with optional paprika and cayenne pepper if desired.

Serve

  1. 9

    Plate the Onion Rings

Serve the onion rings hot in a basket or on a platter. Enjoy with your favorite dipping sauce!
