Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Prepare the Potatoes

Peel the Russet potatoes and grate them using a box grater or a food processor. Place the grated potatoes in a bowl of cold water to soak for about 10 minutes. This helps remove excess starch.

  2. 2

    Drain and Dry

After soaking, drain the potatoes and place them on a clean kitchen towel. Pat them dry thoroughly to remove any excess moisture, which helps achieve crispiness.

Cooking

  1. 3

    Heat the Oil

In a large skillet, heat the vegetable oil and butter over medium heat until hot but not smoking.

  2. 4

    Cook the Onions and Garlic

Add the finely chopped onion to the skillet and sauté until translucent, about 3-4 minutes. Then add the minced garlic and cook for an additional minute until fragrant.

  3. 5

    Add the Potatoes

Carefully add the grated and dried potatoes to the skillet, spreading them out evenly. Season with salt and black pepper.

  4. 6

    Cook the Hash Browns

Let the potatoes cook undisturbed for about 5-7 minutes until they are golden brown on the bottom. Then, using a spatula, flip the potatoes in sections and cook for another 5-7 minutes until they are crispy and golden all over.

  5. 7

    Serve

Once cooked, remove the hash browns from the skillet and place them on a paper towel to absorb excess oil. Garnish with chopped parsley and shredded cheese if desired. Serve hot.
