For the Patty Melt

Method

Prepare the Patty Melt

  1. 1

    Season the Beef

In a mixing bowl, combine the ground beef with salt and black pepper. Mix gently until just combined. Form into two equal patties, about 1/2 inch thick.

  2. 2

    Cook the Patties

Heat a skillet over medium-high heat. Once hot, add the beef patties and cook for about 3-4 minutes on each side, or until they reach your desired doneness. Remove from the skillet and set aside.

  3. 3

    Caramelize the Onions

In the same skillet, reduce the heat to medium and add 1 tablespoon of butter. Slice the onion into thin rings and add to the skillet. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the onions are soft and caramelized, about 10-12 minutes.

  4. 4

    Assemble the Patty Melt

On two slices of rye bread, layer a slice of Swiss cheese, a cooked beef patty, and a generous portion of caramelized onions. Top with another slice of Swiss cheese and finish with another slice of rye bread.

  5. 5

    Grill the Sandwich

In the skillet, melt another tablespoon of butter over medium heat. Carefully place the assembled patty melts in the skillet. Grill for about 3-4 minutes on each side, or until the bread is golden brown and the cheese is melted.

  6. 6

    Serve

Remove the patty melts from the skillet, slice in half if desired, and serve hot.
