Negroni Base

Finish & Garnish

Method

Negroni Base

  1. 1

    Measure and Combine

Add 1 oz gin, 1 oz Campari and 1 oz sweet vermouth to a mixing glass.

  2. 2

    Add St. Agrestis Twist

Pour 0.25 oz (a quarter ounce) of St. Agrestis aperitif or a gentian-laced aperitif into the mixing glass to add herbal depth and a slightly bitter, mineral note that distinguishes the 'Phony' variation.

Chill & Dilute

  1. 3

Fill the mixing glass with plenty of ice. Stir the mixture gently but thoroughly with a bar spoon for 20–30 seconds (about 15–20 full strokes) until well chilled and properly diluted — the cocktail should be slightly viscous and cool to the touch of the glass.

Finish & Garnish

  1. 4

Place a large clear ice cube in a rocks glass. Strain the stirred cocktail over the ice cube using a Hawthorne or julep strainer to remove shards.

  2. 5

Express the orange peel over the drink: hold the peel with the outside facing down, give a firm squeeze to release the oils across the surface, then rub the rim of the glass with the peel and drop it into the drink as a garnish.

  3. 6

Optional: add 2 drops of freshly expressed orange oil on the surface for a brighter citrus nose.
