Onion Rings

Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Prepare the Onions

Peel the onions and slice them into 1/4-inch thick rings. Separate the rings and place them in a bowl of cold water. Let them soak for about 30 minutes to help reduce the sharpness.

  2. 2

    Make the Batter

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, cornstarch, baking powder, salt, black pepper, and cayenne pepper until well combined. Gradually add the beer, mixing until smooth. The batter should be thick enough to coat the onion rings but still pourable.

  3. 3

    Heat the Oil

In a large, deep pot or a deep fryer, heat the vegetable oil to 375°F (190°C). Use a thermometer for accuracy.

  4. 4

    Coat the Onion Rings

Remove the onion rings from the water and pat them dry with a paper towel. Dip each onion ring into the batter, allowing the excess to drip off.

  5. 5

    Fry the Onion Rings

Carefully place the coated onion rings into the hot oil, working in batches to avoid overcrowding. Fry for about 2-3 minutes or until golden brown and crispy. Use a slotted spoon to remove them from the oil and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.

  6. 6

    Serve

Serve the onion rings hot with your favorite dipping sauce, such as ranch or ketchup.
