Cocktail

  1. 1

    Chill glass (optional)

Place a highball or Collins glass in the freezer for 5–10 minutes or fill it with ice water while you prepare ingredients to chill the glass. Discard ice water before assembling.

  2. 2

Fill the chilled highball or Collins glass about three-quarters full with fresh ice (use the 1 cup ice listed).

  3. 3

Pour 2 oz tequila over the ice.

  4. 4

Add 4 oz fresh orange juice. If you prefer, briefly stir once to combine tequila and orange juice so the drink is evenly chilled.

  5. 5

Slowly pour 1 tsp grenadine syrup down the inside of the glass (or over the back of a spoon held just above the surface). The grenadine is denser and will sink to the bottom, creating the sunrise gradient.

  6. 6

Do not stir after adding grenadine; let it gradually rise for the layered sunrise effect. If desired, you can gently tilt the glass to enhance the gradient, but avoid mixing.

  7. 7

Garnish with an orange wheel or slice on the rim and drop a maraschino cherry into the drink if using.

  8. 8

Serve with a straw placed toward the back of the glass (so the first sips capture the orange then the grenadine) and an optional stirrer on the side for those who want to blend the layers.
