Cocktail Base

Brightening / Aromatics

Method

Cocktail Base

  1. 1

    Juice and measure

Juice fresh limes and an orange/grapefruit as needed. Measure 2 oz blanco tequila, 0.75 oz fresh lime juice, 0.5 oz fresh orange juice, 0.5 oz agave nectar, and 0.5 oz orange liqueur into a cocktail shaker.

  2. 2

    Add bitters

Add 2 dashes of Angostura bitters to the shaker to add aromatic depth and a subtle bitter edge that balances the citrus and agave.

  3. 3

    Shake with ice

Fill the shaker with ice (enough to nearly fill). Secure the lid and shake vigorously for 12–15 seconds until the shaker is very cold and slightly frosted. This chills and dilutes the cocktail to the proper strength.

Finish & Serve

  1. 4

    Prepare glass

If you prefer a salted rim, rub a lime wedge around the glass rim and dip lightly into the salt (use about 0.25 tsp salt). Otherwise, chill the glass briefly or fill with fresh ice.

  2. 5

    Strain and serve

Strain the shaken cocktail into a rocks glass over fresh ice (large cube or crushed, about 1 cup by volume).

  3. 6

    Garnish

Express the oils of a grapefruit twist over the drink (twist the peel with the outside facing down over the glass) and drop it in. Add a lime wheel or wedge on the rim. Optionally, add one more tiny dash of bitters onto the top of the drink for aroma.
