Fruit & Garnish

Method

Fruit & Garnish

  1. 1

    Chill and prepare

Chill all whole melons and berries in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes before serving. This enhances flavor and makes slicing cleaner.

  2. 2

    Wash berries and mint

Rinse strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, and mint under cold running water. Pat dry gently with paper towels or a clean kitchen towel. Hull strawberries and cut large ones in half lengthwise.

  3. 3

    Slice watermelon

Place the watermelon on a large cutting board. Cut off both ends to create stable flat surfaces. Stand the watermelon on an end and slice downward to remove the rind in strips, following the curve. Cut the watermelon into 3/4-inch thick slices, then trim into half-moons or wedges as desired. Arrange slices on a large serving platter.

  4. 4

    Slice cantaloupe

Cut the cantaloupe in half and scoop out seeds with a spoon. Cut each half into 1/2-inch thick slices, then remove rind and cut into crescents or wedges. Arrange alongside the watermelon on the platter.

  5. 5

    Slice honeydew

Halve the honeydew, remove seeds, then slice into 1/2-inch rounds. Remove rind and cut into crescents or wedges matching the cantaloupe shape. Add to the platter with the other melons.

  6. 6

    Add berries and mint

Scatter strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, and blackberries evenly among the melon slices. Tuck whole or torn mint leaves throughout for color and aroma.

  7. 7

    Prepare lime

Zest one lime lightly over the assembled fruit (optional) and cut both limes into wedges for serving.

Optional Dressing & Finish

  1. 8

    Make honey-lime dressing (optional)

In a small bowl whisk together honey (or agave), the juice of one lime (about 2 tbs), and 1 teaspoon extra-virgin olive oil until emulsified. Taste and adjust sweetness or acidity. This will lightly glaze the fruit and add brightness.

  2. 9

    Dress fruit

Drizzle the dressing lightly and evenly over the melon slices and berries just before serving — use about half for a subtle coating and reserve the rest for guests to add if desired.

  3. 10

    Season

Sprinkle coarse sea salt very lightly over the melons (start with 1/4 tsp and add to taste) and, if using, a small pinch of freshly ground black pepper to heighten flavor. Crumble feta or goat cheese over half the platter if you want a savory contrast.

  4. 11

    Garnish and serve

Garnish with additional mint leaves and lime wedges on the side. Serve chilled. Leftover fruit can be covered and refrigerated up to 24 hours; add dressing and cheese just before serving to keep textures bright.
