Lowfat Milk (Makes approx. 1 liter)

Equipment & optional additions

Method

Lowfat Milk (Makes approx. 1 liter)

  1. 1

    Dilution to reduce fat

Pour 1.0 liter of whole milk into a large mixing jug. To reduce overall fat content to approximately lowfat levels (~1–1.5% fat), add 200 ml cold water while slowly stirring. This dilution lowers fat concentration without drastically changing texture. If you prefer a very specific fat percentage, adjust water amount: for ~1.5% target from 3.25%, add ~200 ml water per liter.

  2. 2

    Optional: Improve mouthfeel

If the diluted milk feels too thin, dissolve 25 g pasteurized skim milk powder in 50 ml of the cold water before combining, then add the remaining 150 ml water. This restores some protein and body without increasing fat.

  3. 3

    Mixing

Use an electric blender or whisk to blend the diluted milk for 20–30 seconds until homogenous and slightly frothy. This helps evenly distribute proteins and any dissolved powder so texture is smooth.

  4. 4

    Strain (optional)

If you used milk powder or want extra smoothness, pour the milk through a fine-mesh strainer or cheesecloth into a clean pitcher to remove any undissolved particles or foam.

  5. 5

    Chill

Place the pitcher in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour before serving. To chill faster, place the pitcher in a larger bowl with ice cubes and cold water for 15–20 minutes, stirring occasionally. Remove ice before storing.

  6. 6

    Storage and use

Store the prepared lowfat milk in a sealed container in the refrigerator and use within 3–4 days. Shake gently before each use as slight separation can occur. Use it as a 1:1 substitute for regular milk in cereal, coffee, cooking, or baking where lowfat milk is suitable.

Equipment & optional additions

  1. 7

Have a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth ready if you plan to remove any undissolved milk powder particles or foam.

  2. 8

Use an electric blender or whisk for best emulsion; a spoon will work but may require longer mixing to achieve uniform consistency.

  3. 9

Measure liquids accurately with a measuring jug or kitchen scale for consistent fat reduction.
