Method
Base
- 1
Combine dry ingredients
In a small bowl or measuring cup, whisk together the unsweetened cocoa powder and granulated sugar until evenly combined. This helps prevent clumps when you add the milk.
- 2
Warm a small amount of milk
Place 2 tablespoons of the whole milk in a small saucepan or microwave-safe cup and warm until just warm to the touch (about 20–30 seconds in the microwave or over low heat). Do not boil. Warming a little milk makes it easier to dissolve the cocoa mixture.

- 4
Combine with remaining milk
Pour the remaining milk (about 1 7/8 cups) into a serving glass or a small pitcher. Add the cocoa paste and whisk or stir vigorously until fully incorporated and the chocolate milk is smooth. If you prefer the drink warmed, combine everything in the saucepan and heat gently over low heat, stirring, until steaming but not boiling (2–3 minutes).
- 5
Adjust sweetness and chill or serve
Taste and add a pinch of salt if desired to enhance flavor. If serving cold, add a couple of ice cubes or chill in the refrigerator for 10–15 minutes. If serving warm, pour into a mug and proceed to garnish.
Optional enrichments & garnish
- 6
Stir in the vanilla extract to the finished chocolate milk for depth of flavor.
- 7
Top with whipped cream and sprinkle chocolate shavings or mini chocolate chips on top for garnish. Serve immediately.
