Cocktail Base
Seltzer & Finish
Method
Mixing the Base
- 1
Measure and combine
Add the gin or vodka, fresh lemon juice, simple syrup and orange liqueur into a cocktail shaker.
- 2
Add ice and shake
Fill the shaker with ice (enough to nearly fill). Seal and shake vigorously for 10–12 seconds until the outside of the shaker is cold and slightly frosted.
- 3
- 4
Double-strain into glass
Open the shaker and double-strain the shaken mixture (using the shaker lid and a fine mesh strainer) over the ice-filled glass to remove small ice shards and pulp.
Finish with Seltzer & Garnish
- 5
Top with seltzer
Gently pour the chilled seltzer over the back of a spoon into the glass to preserve carbonation, about 3 oz (adjust to taste). This will create a light, effervescent top layer and a subtle rotating visual as liquids settle.
- 6
Stir gently
Give the drink one slow, gentle stir (2–3 turns) with a bar spoon to integrate the seltzer without flattening it, creating a slight layered swirl.
- 7
Garnish
Smack the mint sprig between your palms to release aroma and slap it onto the drink as a garnish alongside a lemon wheel or twist perched on the rim.
- 8
Serve
Serve immediately while effervescent. Encourage the drinker to give it an occasional gentle stir to keep the rotating (swirling) motion of flavors and bubbles.
