Method

Cocktail

  1. 1

    Prepare glass

Place a chilled coupe or Nick & Nora glass in the freezer or fill it with ice water while you build the cocktail to ensure the final drink is well chilled.

  2. 2

    Combine ingredients

In a mixing glass, add 2 oz single malt Scotch, 0.5 oz sweet vermouth, 0.25 oz orange curaçao, 0.25 oz sugar syrup, and 2 dashes Angostura bitters.

  3. 3

    Add ice and stir

Fill the mixing glass with large ice cubes (about 4 cubes). Stir gently for 30–45 seconds until the mixture is well chilled, slightly diluted, and slightly viscous—this usually opens the whisky and integrates the sweet components.

  4. 4

    Strain

Discard the ice or water from your chilled serving glass. Double-strain the cocktail from the mixing glass into the chilled coupe or Nick & Nora using a Hawthorne/ julep strainer; a fine mesh is optional but not necessary for this stirred drink.

  5. 5

    Garnish

Express the oils from 1 lemon peel over the surface of the cocktail by holding the peel skin-side down above the drink and giving it a quick twist. Rub the peel on the rim if desired, then drop the twist into the drink or discard according to preference.

  6. 6

    Serve

Serve immediately. The profile should highlight the single malt's character balanced by the vinous sweetness of the vermouth, a hint of orange, and gentle bitterness from Angostura.
