Cocktail

Method

Cocktail

  1. 1

    Build and chill

Fill a mixing glass or cocktail shaker halfway with large ice cubes. Pour in 1 oz bourbon, 0.5 oz orange liqueur, 0.5 oz fresh lemon juice and 0.5 oz simple syrup. Add 2 dashes of Angostura bitters.

  2. 2

    Stir

Stir the mixture briskly with a bar spoon for 20–30 seconds (about 15–20 full rotations) until well chilled and slightly diluted.

  3. 3

    Prepare glass

Fill a rocks glass or short stem wine glass with crushed ice (or a single large clear ice cube if preferred).

  4. 4

    Combine with wine

Strain the chilled spirit mixture over the prepared glass with ice. Immediately top with 6 oz (about 3/4 cup) of Josh Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon poured gently over the back of a spoon to create a layered, integrated pour. Give one very gentle stir (1–2 turns) to marry the ingredients without fully losing the wine's texture.

  5. 5

    Garnish and finish

Express the oils from the orange peel over the surface by holding the peel skin-side down and giving it a sharp twist above the glass, then wipe the rim with the peel and drop it into the drink with the brandied or Luxardo cherry on a pick. Serve immediately.
