Method

Cocktail

  1. 1

    Chill glass

Place a rocks glass in the freezer or fill it with ice and water to chill while you build the cocktail.

  2. 2

    Combine ingredients

In a mixing glass or shaker filled with plenty of ice, add 2 oz rye whiskey, 0.5 oz amaretto, 0.5 oz Bravo Amaro, 0.25 oz Fernet, and 1 dash Angostura bitters.

  3. 3

    Stir

Stir the mixture briskly with a bar spoon for 20–30 seconds (about 20–30 full turns) until well chilled and slightly diluted (target 18–22°F / 10–12°C drop from starting temp).

  4. 4

    Prepare glass

Discard the chilling ice/water from the rocks glass if used and add 1–2 large fresh ice cubes or a single large cube.

  5. 5

    Strain and finish

Double-strain (or fine-strain if you used crushed ice) the stirred cocktail into the prepared rocks glass over the large ice cube(s).

  6. 6

    Garnish

Express the oils of an orange peel over the drink by holding the peel skin-side down about 3–4 inches above the glass and giving it a firm squeeze to release the oils, then rub the rim with the peel and drop it onto the surface as garnish. Optionally, add a Luxardo cherry on a pick.

  7. 7

    Serve

Present immediately. Sip slowly to appreciate the rye backbone balanced by the nutty amaretto, herbal amaro, and the bitter menthol notes of the Fernet.
