Cocktail

Method

Cocktail

  1. 1

    Chill glass

Place a coupe or chilled cocktail glass in the freezer or fill with ice and water while you prepare the drink to properly chill.

  2. 2

    Build and stir

In a mixing glass add the rye whiskey (2 oz), bianco vermouth (3/4 oz), Brooklyn-style amaro (1/4 oz), Luxardo Maraschino liqueur (1/4 oz), and 1 dash of Angostura bitters. Fill the mixing glass with plenty of ice (about 1 cup) so the liquid is well surrounded.

  3. 3

    Stir to chill and dilute

Using a bar spoon, stir the mixture for 20–30 seconds (about 20–30 full rotations) until the outside of the mixing glass is cold and the drink is properly diluted (roughly 20–25% dilution depending on ice). This produces a clear, silky cocktail unlike shaking.

  4. 4

    Strain

Discard the ice and water from the chilled coupe (if you used them). Double-strain the stirred cocktail through a Hawthorne or julep strainer (and optional fine mesh) into the chilled glass to remove any small ice shards.

Garnish & Serve

  1. 5

Garnish the drink with one Luxardo or brandied cherry placed on a pick and rested in the glass. Express the oils of an orange twist over the surface (optional) by holding the twist skin-side down above the drink and giving it a quick pinch, then rub the rim with the peel and drop it into the cocktail or discard per preference.

  2. 6

Serve immediately. The Classic 1920's is a lighter, brighter cousin of the Manhattan—sip and enjoy the balance of rye spice, floral bianco vermouth, bitter-sweet amaro, and cherry maraschino notes.
