Method

Cocktail

  1. 1

    Prepare glass

Select an old-fashioned (rocks) glass. Add 4 ice cubes to chill the glass while you prepare the drink, or if preferred, leave the glass empty for serving up.

  2. 2

    Add ingredients to shaker

Into a cocktail shaker add 2 oz 4 Roses Yellow Label bourbon, 0.75 oz freshly squeezed lemon juice, 0.5 oz simple syrup, and 2 dashes of Angostura bitters.

  3. 3

    Add ice and shake

Add approximately 6 ice cubes to the shaker. Secure the lid and shake vigorously for about 10–15 seconds until the shaker is well chilled and you feel condensation on the outside.

  4. 4

    Strain

Discard the chilling ice from the serving glass if you chilled it. Using a Hawthorne strainer (or the shaker’s built-in strainer), double-strain the cocktail into the prepared old-fashioned glass over fresh ice (the 4 cubes reserved for serving) for a rocks presentation, or strain into a coupe for a 'up' presentation without ice.

  5. 5

    Garnish and serve

Express a lemon twist over the drink by holding the twist skin-side down above the glass and giving it a quick squeeze to spray oils onto the cocktail. Rub the rim of the glass lightly with the twist if desired, drop the twist into the drink as garnish, and serve immediately.

  6. 6

    Optional adjustments

For a slightly sweeter cocktail, increase simple syrup to 0.75–1.0 oz. For a more spirit-forward drink, reduce lemon juice to 0.5 oz or reduce syrup. Adjust bitters to taste (1–3 dashes).
