Sandwich

Salad components (if salad chosen)

Finishing / optional

Method

Sandwich

  1. 1

    Prepare bread and spread

Lightly butter one side of each bread slice. On the unbuttered sides, spread mayonnaise on one slice and Dijon mustard on the other.

  2. 2

    Assemble sandwich

On the mayonnaise-spread slice (unbuttered side up), layer the lettuce leaf (trim large ribs if needed), then turkey slices, tomato slices, red onion rings (if using), and the cheese slice. Sprinkle salt and pepper over the tomato and lettuce for seasoning.

  3. 3

    Finish and toast

Close the sandwich with the mustard-spread slice (buttered side out). Heat a nonstick skillet or griddle over medium heat. Place the sandwich buttered-side down and press gently with a spatula. Cook 2–3 minutes until golden brown, then flip and cook another 2 minutes until the second side is golden and the cheese begins to melt. Remove to a cutting board and let rest 1 minute. Cut sandwich in half (this is the 'half sandwich' portion — serve one half).

French fries (if chosen)

  1. 4

Oven method for frozen fries: preheat oven according to package (typically 425°F / 220°C). Spread fries on a baking sheet in a single layer. Bake 12–18 minutes, turning once halfway, until crisp and golden. Sprinkle a pinch of salt immediately after removing from oven. Serve about 3 oz (one half order) alongside the half sandwich with ketchup.

  2. 5

Pan-fry (for fresh hand-cut): heat 1/4 inch oil in a skillet over medium-high. Fry in batches 6–8 minutes until golden and crisp, drain on paper towel, season with salt, and serve with ketchup.

Tater tots (if chosen)

  1. 6

Bake frozen tater tots per package instructions (usually 400°F/200°C for 18–22 minutes). Spread on a baking sheet, shake halfway to turn. Bake until golden brown and crisp. Serve hot with ketchup alongside the sandwich half.

Salad (if chosen)

  1. 7

Combine mixed salad greens, cucumber slices, and cherry tomato halves in a bowl. Drizzle with 1 tablespoon vinaigrette, toss gently to coat. Season with a small pinch of salt and a grind of black pepper. Serve the dressed salad portion beside the half sandwich.

Soup (if chosen)

  1. 8

Warm prepared soup in a small saucepan over medium heat until simmering, about 4–6 minutes, stirring occasionally. Pour into a cup or small bowl. Garnish with chopped parsley if desired. Serve the 1-cup soup alongside the half sandwich.

Finishing

  1. 9

Plate the half sandwich with the chosen side (fries, tots, salad, or soup). Add a pickle spear and a small dish of ketchup if serving fries or tots. Serve immediately while sandwich is warm and cheese is slightly melted.
