Method
Sandwich
- 1
Prepare produce
Wash the tomato and lettuce. Pat dry with a paper towel. Slice the tomato into 2 even 1/4-inch slices. Remove any large tough stem from the lettuce leaf if present and tear or trim to fit the bread.
- 2
Toast bread (optional)
If the customer prefers toasted, lightly spread 1/2 tbsp butter or margarine on one side of each bread slice. Heat a skillet over medium heat and toast buttered sides until golden, about 1–2 minutes per side. Alternatively, use a toaster and toast to desired level (no added butter required). Remove and place on work surface, buttered/toasted side up.
- 3
Assemble spread
Evenly spread 1 tablespoon mayonnaise onto one slice of bread. If you prefer the mayo on both slices, divide it between them.
- 4
Layer meats and cheese
Place 3 slices of deli turkey on the mayo-spread slice, arranging them to cover the surface. Top the turkey with 3 slices of deli ham, slightly overlapping. Place 1 slice of Swiss cheese on top of the ham, centered.
- 5
Add produce and season
Place the 2 tomato slices on top of the Swiss cheese. Lightly sprinkle 1/4 tsp salt and 1/8 tsp black pepper over the tomato slices. Place the lettuce leaf on top of the tomatoes.
- 6
Finish and cut
Place the second slice of bread on top, toasted side up if applicable. Press down gently to compress the sandwich slightly. Using a sharp knife, cut the sandwich in half diagonally (or straight down the middle if preferred).
- 7
Serve
Plate one half of the sandwich (this recipe yields a half sandwich portion). If preparing for full sandwich, serve both halves. Serve immediately or wrap well for deli-style to-go service.
