Cheese Slices

Method

Cheese Slices

  1. 1

    Prepare bread and spread

Remove two slices of sandwich bread and place them on a clean work surface or plate. Evenly spread about 1 tbs softened butter on one side of each slice. If you prefer, spread 1 tsp mayonnaise on the opposite side of one slice instead of butter for a tangier result.

  2. 2

    Assemble sandwiches

Place one slice of American cheese on the buttered side of one bread slice. Top with the second slice of American cheese if you prefer an extra-cheesy sandwich. Close with the second slice of bread, buttered side out.

  3. 3

    Toast or grill (optional)

Heat a nonstick skillet or griddle over medium heat (about 325–350°F/160–175°C). Place the sandwich in the skillet and cook 2–3 minutes per side until bread is golden brown and cheese is melted, pressing gently with a spatula. If you prefer untoasted, simply serve assembled sandwiches without heating.

  4. 4

    Season and serve

If desired, sprinkle a pinch (~1/4 tsp) of black pepper over the melted cheese before cutting. Transfer the sandwich to a plate, cut in half if desired, and keep warm while preparing the drink.

Drink

  1. 5

Select a 12 oz cold drink of choice. If serving chilled, fill a glass with 4 ice cubes and pour the drink over the ice.

  2. 6

If serving iced tea or water, squeeze the optional lemon wedge into the drink and drop the wedge into the glass for garnish.

  3. 7

Place the drink alongside the two cheese slices and serve immediately.
