Sandwich

Method

Sandwich

  1. 1

    Prepare bread

Take 4 slices of bread. Spread about 1 tablespoon of butter or mayonnaise evenly on one side of two slices (these will be the inside faces). Spread the remaining 1 tablespoon on the outside faces of the other two slices if you plan to toast or grill the sandwich for a golden crust.

  2. 2

    Assemble cheeses

Place one cheddar cheese slice on the unbuttered side of one bread slice (inside). Add one American (or Swiss) slice on top of the cheddar so each sandwich will have two cheese slices. If you are making two separate sandwiches, repeat on the second pair of bread slices. Season lightly with a pinch (about 1/8 tsp) of ground black pepper over the cheese if desired.

  3. 3

    Add optional fillings

If using tomato or lettuce, place 2 tomato slices and 1 leaf of lettuce on top of the cheese for each sandwich. These are optional; ensure tomato is patted dry so bread doesn't get soggy.

  4. 4

    Close and toast (optional)

Place the buttered outside slices over the assembled cheese (buttered side out). For a grilled sandwich: heat a nonstick skillet or griddle over medium heat. Place sandwich in skillet and cook 2–3 minutes per side until bread is golden brown and cheese is melted, pressing gently with a spatula. For a cold sandwich: simply close and cut diagonally or in half.

  5. 5

    Serve

Remove from heat, let rest 1 minute, then cut and plate. Serve immediately while cheese is warm and melty, or serve cold if not toasted.

Drink

  1. 6

    Prepare glass

Select a 16 fl oz glass. If serving a cold beverage, add 3–4 ice cubes to the glass.

  2. 7

    Pour beverage

Pour 16 fl oz (about 2 cups) of the chosen drink (milk, iced tea, or juice) into the glass over the ice. If using iced tea and you prefer sweetened, stir in 1 tsp simple syrup or sugar until dissolved.

  3. 8

    Garnish

If serving iced tea, add a lemon slice on the rim or into the drink. Serve immediately alongside the two-cheese sandwiches.
