Warm or serve milk
Pour 4 cups of whole milk into a clean saucepan. For cold milk, simply chill in the refrigerator and serve. For warm milk, heat the milk over low to medium-low heat, stirring or swirling occasionally to prevent a skin from forming, until it reaches your desired temperature (about 120–140°F / 49–60°C) or small steam begins to rise. Do not boil. Remove from heat and serve immediately.
Flavoring (optional)
For a lightly sweetened warm milk: after removing from heat, whisk in 1 tablespoon sugar or honey and 1/2 to 1 teaspoon vanilla extract until dissolved. Taste and adjust sweetness or vanilla to preference.
For salted milk: stir in 1/8 to 1/4 teaspoon salt (start with a pinch) to enhance flavor. The ingredient list includes 1 tsp as an optional container; use sparingly.
For hot cocoa style: in a small bowl, mix 2 tablespoons cocoa powder with 1 tablespoon sugar (or to taste) and a splash of milk to make a smooth paste. Add the paste to the warmed milk and whisk until fully incorporated and slightly frothy. Heat gently until warm, do not boil.
Cooling and storing
To chill milk quickly: pour into a clean container and place in the refrigerator uncovered until cooled (about 1–2 hours) then cover. Do not leave milk at room temperature for more than 2 hours.
Store fresh milk in the coldest part of the refrigerator (not the door) and use within 5–7 days of opening or by the package's use-by date. For warmed milk that will not be consumed immediately, cool to room temperature quickly, refrigerate, and use within 24 hours; reheat gently when needed.
