Main

Optional (for richer or served chilled)

Method

Prepare chocolate syrup base

1

Make a smooth chocolate paste

In a small bowl or measuring cup, combine the cocoa powder and granulated sugar. Add 2 tablespoons of the milk and whisk or stir vigorously until a smooth, lump-free paste forms. The paste should be thick but pourable. This step prevents dry cocoa from clumping when mixed into the rest of the milk.

2

Warm briefly (optional)

If you prefer a hotter drink or want the sugar to dissolve completely, warm the paste gently in the microwave for 10–15 seconds or place the bowl over a warm water bath and stir until slightly warmed. Do not overheat—this is only to help dissolve the sugar and cocoa.

Combine and finish

3

Pour the remaining milk (about 1 14 cups) into a pitcher or serving glass. Add the chocolate paste and whisk vigorously until fully incorporated and the mixture is uniform in color.

4

Stir in the vanilla extract and a pinch of salt. Taste and adjust sweetness: add the additional teaspoon of powdered sugar or an extra 1/2–1 teaspoon granulated sugar if desired, stirring until dissolved.

5

For a richer drink, whisk in the heavy cream until combined. For a chilled drink, fill a tall glass with ice cubes and pour the chocolate milk over the ice.

6

Serve immediately. If you prefer frothier chocolate milk, blend the finished mixture in a blender for 10–15 seconds to aerate before serving.
