Method
Tea Base
Brew the tea
Bring 10 cups of water just to a rolling boil. Remove from heat and immediately add 6 black tea bags. Cover the pot or container and steep for 5 to 7 minutes for a brisk, full-flavored brew (longer for stronger tea).
After steeping, gently remove the tea bags, pressing them once against the side with a spoon to extract the remaining liquid. Discard the bags.
Sweetener (optional)
Make simple syrup-like sweetener
If sweetened tea is desired, combine 3 tablespoons granulated sugar with 1/4 cup hot water in a heatproof cup and stir until completely dissolved. Stir the dissolved sugar into the hot tea until fully incorporated. Taste and adjust sweetness, adding up to another tablespoon if preferred.
Citrus Brightness (optional)
For a bright citrus note, stir in 1/2 cup fresh lemon juice into the brewed tea while still warm. Add lemon slices to the pitcher for aroma and presentation. Taste and adjust lemon to preference.
Finish & Serve
Allow the tea to cool at room temperature for 20 to 30 minutes, then transfer the pitcher to the refrigerator and chill for at least 1 hour. If you prefer a less concentrated tea, add up to 2 cups cold water to dilute to taste before chilling.
Leftover iced tea can be refrigerated in a covered pitcher for up to 4 days. Stir before serving as some separation may occur.
