Flour Tortillas
Method
Flour Tortillas
- 1
Prepare dough
In a large bowl, whisk together the flour and salt. Stir in the melted butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Gradually pour in the warm water, mixing with a spoon until a soft dough forms.
- 2
Knead
Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 3–5 minutes until smooth and elastic. If the dough sticks, dust with a little extra flour.
- 3
Rest
Shape the dough into a ball, cover with a towel or plastic wrap, and let rest for 15–20 minutes to relax the gluten.
- 4
Divide and pre-roll
Divide dough into 8 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a smooth ball and cover with a towel to prevent drying.
- 5
Roll out
On a lightly floured surface, roll each dough ball into a circle about 8–10 inches (20–25 cm) in diameter. Keep remaining dough covered while rolling.
- 6
Cook
Heat a dry skillet or comal over medium-high heat. Cook each tortilla for 1–2 minutes per side, until brown spots form and the tortilla puffs slightly. Adjust heat as needed to prevent burning.
- 7
Keep warm and serve
Transfer cooked tortillas to a clean towel to keep warm. Stack and cover to retain softness. If desired, brush lightly with extra melted butter before serving.
