Cocktail

Method

Cocktail Preparation

1

Combine ingredients

Add rye whisky, black walnut liqueur, sweet vermouth, optional amaro, simple syrup, Angostura bitters, and orange bitters into a mixing glass.

2

Add ice and stir

Fill the mixing glass with large cubed ice (or crushed if that's all you have) and stir gently but thoroughly for 20–30 seconds until the mixture is well chilled and slightly diluted (about 15–20% dilution). Aim for the mixing glass to become frosted on the exterior.

3

Strain

Place a single large clear rock glass on the bar. Add the large ice cube. Double-strain (or fine-strain) the chilled cocktail from the mixing glass into the glass over the large ice cube to keep the drink clear and smooth.

Garnish & Serve

4

Express orange oils

Hold the orange twist skin-side down above the drink and give it a firm squeeze to express the essential oils across the surface of the cocktail. Rub the twist briefly along the rim of the glass to transfer aroma, then drop it into the drink.

5

Add walnut garnish (optional)

If using, toast a black walnut half lightly in a dry skillet for 1–2 minutes until fragrant. Let cool briefly and perch it on the rim or float it on the ice as a rustic accent.

6

Serve immediately. Recommend sipping slowly to appreciate the black walnut notes alongside the spicy rye. Provide a small spoon if the walnut garnish is used.
