Method

Sandwich

  1. 1

    Prep

Choose bread: super seed bread or brioche. Lay out 8 slices (2 slices per sandwich). If using mayonnaise for a crisper exterior, set it beside the butter as an alternative spread.

  2. 2

    Butter / Spread

Spread the softened unsalted butter evenly on one side of each bread slice (about 0.5 tbs butter per slice). If using mayonnaise, spread ~0.5 tbs mayo on the outsides of each slice instead of butter.

  3. 3

    Assemble

Place 1 bread slice buttered-side down on your work surface. Add two slices of cheese (slightly overlapping) to each sandwich for good melt. Top with the other slice of bread, buttered-side up. Repeat for all 4 sandwiches.

  4. 4

    Cook

Heat a non-stick skillet or griddle over medium-low heat (aim for about 325–350°F / 160–175°C). Place sandwiches in the pan (do not overcrowd). Cook 3–4 minutes on the first side until golden brown, then flip. Press gently with a spatula and cover the pan with a lid for 1 minute to help the cheese melt, then cook another 2–3 minutes until the second side is golden and cheese is melted. Adjust heat down if bread browns too fast before cheese melts.

  5. 5

    Finish

Transfer sandwiches to a cutting board and let rest 1 minute. Cut each sandwich in half diagonally or down the middle and keep warm until serving.

Sides — Fries (optional)

  1. 6

    Oven method (frozen fries)

Preheat oven to 220°C (425°F). Spread frozen fries in a single layer on a rimmed baking sheet (no overcrowding). Bake 18–22 minutes, turning once halfway through, until golden and crisp. Remove from oven and toss lightly with fine salt to taste. Portion ~170 g (about 1/4 of the bag) per serving.

  2. 7

    Fresh-cut alternative

If using fresh potatoes: cut potatoes into sticks, toss with 1 tbs oil and a pinch of salt, spread in a single layer on a baking sheet, and roast at 220°C (425°F) for 25–30 minutes, turning once, until golden and tender. Season with salt after roasting.

Sides — Fresh Fruit (optional)

  1. 8

    Prepare fruit

Wash all fruit. Core and slice any apples into child-friendly slices. Halve large grapes. Combine apple slices, grapes and berries in a bowl to make about 1 cup fresh fruit per serving (4 cups total). Drizzle the lemon juice over the apple slices and gently toss to prevent browning. Chill briefly or serve immediately.

Drink

  1. 9

    Serve fountain drink

Fill each small cup with ice if desired (~1 cup ice per cup) and dispense a small fountain drink (~240 ml) into each cup. Provide straws and lids as requested. For a lower-sugar option, offer water or a small unsweetened beverage instead.
