Method

Sandwich

  1. 1

    Prepare bread and cheese

If the guest requests gluten-free, use the Gluten-free sourdough slices instead of the regular sourdough. Lay out two slices of bread and place 2 slices of cheddar cheese on one slice.

  2. 2

    Butter the bread

Spread about half of the softened butter (approximately 1/2 tbsp) evenly on the outside face of each slice of bread. The buttered sides will be the outside of the sandwich to achieve a golden crust.

  3. 3

    Assemble

Place the cheese-faced slice (cheese on the unbuttered side) on the stove-side surface, top with the second slice of bread so the buttered sides face out. Press gently to seal.

  4. 4

    Cook on stovetop

Heat a nonstick skillet or griddle over medium-low heat. Place the sandwich in the pan and cook 2–3 minutes until the bottom is golden brown. Reduce heat to low, cover loosely with a lid for 30–60 seconds to help cheese melt, then flip and cook the other side 2–3 minutes until golden and cheese is fully melted. If needed, press gently with a spatula while cooking to ensure even contact. Total cook time should be 4–6 minutes.

  5. 5

    Finish and serve

Remove the sandwich from the pan and let rest 30 seconds, then cut in half (diagonally for a kid-friendly shape). Serve hot with the chosen side and drink.

Sides — Fries

  1. 6

Preheat oven to 220°C (425°F). Spread the frozen fries in a single layer on a baking sheet lined with parchment. Drizzle 1 tsp vegetable oil over the fries or lightly spray. Bake 12–18 minutes, turning once halfway through, until golden and crisp. Remove from oven and season with salt to taste.

  2. 7

    Air fryer method (quicker)

Preheat air fryer to 180°C (350°F). Place fries in a single layer in the basket (do not overcrowd). Cook 8–10 minutes, shaking the basket halfway, until crisp. Lightly salt to taste after cooking.

  3. 8

For a very quick option, place fries on a microwave-safe plate, cover with a paper towel, and microwave 60–90 seconds (varies by microwave). They will be softer and less crisp. Sprinkle salt to taste.

Sides — Fruit Cup

  1. 9

    Prepare fruit

Wash all fruit thoroughly. Hull and quarter strawberries, peel and thinly slice half a banana (to limit browning for kids), and dice a small apple (toss apple pieces immediately with about 1 tsp lemon juice). Measure about 3/4 cup of mixed cut fruit into a small cup or bowl.

  2. 10

    Finish

Lightly toss the fruit with the lemon juice to keep color and serve chilled alongside the sandwich.

Drink

  1. 11

    Pour fountain drink

Fill a kid-size cup with ice as requested (or leave without ice for young children), then pour about 240 ml of the chosen fountain drink. Serve with a straw and lid if needed.
