Preparation

Drink

1. Prepare glass

Chill a rocks glass or coupe by filling it with ice and water, or place it in the freezer for a few minutes. This ensures the cocktail stays cold longer.

2. Measure & combine

In a mixing glass or cocktail shaker filled with ice, add 2 oz Amaro Montenegro, 1 oz sweet vermouth, 0.25 oz dry gin, and 2 dashes of orange bitters.

3. Stir

Using a bar spoon, stir the mixture briskly for about 20–30 seconds (or roughly 15–20 full spoon turns) until the outside of the mixing glass becomes well-chilled and slightly frosted. This chills and dilutes the cocktail to the proper balance.

4. Prepare glass for serving

Discard the ice and water from the chilled serving glass. If you prefer, you can add a single large ice cube to a rocks glass; otherwise serve neat in a chilled coupe.

5. Strain

Double-strain or use a Hawthorne/ julep strainer to pour the chilled cocktail from the mixing glass into the prepared serving glass, leaving ice behind.

6. Garnish

Express the oils of one orange peel over the surface of the cocktail by holding it skin-side down about 3–4 inches above the drink and giving it a firm twist. Rub the rim briefly with the peel and drop it into the glass as garnish.

7. Serve

Serve immediately. Sip slowly to appreciate the complex bitter-sweet herbal profile of Amaro Montenegro balanced with vermouth and a hint of gin and orange.
