Cocktail
- 1
Prepare glass
Chill a Collins or highball glass in the freezer for 5–10 minutes or fill it with ice while you prepare the drink, then discard that ice before final serving if desired.
- 2
Build base
Add 1 cup of fresh ice to a cocktail shaker. Pour in 2 oz vodka, 0.75 oz orange liqueur, 0.5 oz vanilla liqueur, and 0.75 oz fresh lemon juice.
- 3
Add magic syrup
Add 0.5 oz of the magic syrup (butterfly pea flower syrup or other pH-sensitive syrup). Note: butterfly pea syrup will be deep blue/purple and will change color when acid (lemon) is present; adjust amount for color intensity.
- 4
Shake
Secure the shaker and shake vigorously for 10–12 seconds until the outside of the shaker is frosty and the mixture is well chilled and mixed.
- 5
Strain and top
Fill the chilled serving glass with fresh ice. Strain the shaken cocktail into the glass. Gently top with 2 oz chilled soda water poured slowly over the back of a spoon to retain effervescence and layering if desired.
- 6
Watch the colour change
As the lemon juice and/or soda mixes with the magic syrup in the glass, the drink will shift color—often from blue/purple to pink/lavender depending on syrup and acid levels. If you want a more dramatic shift, squeeze a thin lemon twist over the drink after pouring to release extra citrus oils/juice.

Notes
If you use a vanilla syrup instead of vanilla liqueur, reduce the lemon slightly if you want a less tart drink. Adjust magic syrup amount for desired color effect. For a nonalcoholic version, replace vodka with chilled soda or a neutral tonic and orange & vanilla liqueurs with their nonalcoholic alternatives or syrups.
