Cocktail
Vanilla Tea Syrup (makes ~6 oz)
Method
Vanilla Tea Syrup
- 1
Make the syrup
Combine 3 oz water and 3 oz granulated sugar in a small saucepan over medium heat. Stir until the sugar fully dissolves and the mixture just reaches a gentle simmer (do not boil vigorously).
- 2
- 3
Stir in 1/4 tsp pure vanilla extract while the syrup is still warm. Let the syrup cool to room temperature, then transfer to a clean jar. Refrigerate—syrup keeps 10–14 days.
Cocktail Assembly
- 4
Chill: Place a coupe or rocks glass in the freezer or fill it with ice water to chill while you build the drink.
- 5
Prepare citrus: Using a small sharp knife or a channel knife, cut one orange peel twist and one lemon peel twist (about 1 1/2–2 inches each). Set aside.
- 6
Build the cocktail: In a mixing glass or cocktail shaker, add 1.5 oz Cognac, 0.75 oz aged whiskey, 0.75 oz vanilla tea syrup, and 0.5 oz fresh lemon juice.
- 7
- 8
Strain: Dump the ice or water from your chilled serving glass. Double-strain the cocktail into the chilled coupe or a rocks glass over one large ice cube if preferred.
- 9
Garnish and finish: Express the orange twist over the drink by holding it skin-side down about 2–3 inches above the surface and giving it a firm squeeze to spray the oils onto the cocktail. Rub the twist around the rim, then drop it into the drink. Repeat with the lemon twist, expressing oils and placing it on the surface or on the rim for layered citrus aroma.
- 10
Serve: Present immediately. The drink balances cognac richness, whiskey warmth, vanilla-tea sweetness and bright citrus aromatics—enjoy.
