Method
Prep
Chill glass
Place a coupe or chilled rocks glass in the freezer or fill it with ice water to chill while you prepare the cocktail.
Gather bourbon, scotch, sweet vermouth, bitters, ice, mixing glass, bar spoon, julep strainer (or Hawthorne) and a coupe or rocks glass.
Mixing
Combine ingredients
In a mixing glass, add 6 ice cubes, 2 oz bourbon, 0.5 oz scotch, 1 oz sweet vermouth, 2 dashes Angostura bitters and 1 dash orange bitters.
Stir
Stir the mixture gently and steadily for 30–45 seconds (about 20–30 full rotations) until well chilled and properly diluted — the outside of the glass should be very cold and slightly frosted.
Taste check
Optionally, strain a small taste to check balance: it should be spirit-forward, mildly sweet, with a smoky top note from the scotch. Adjust by ±1/4 oz vermouth or a dash more bitters if needed, then stir again briefly.
Finish & Serve
Strain
Dump the ice or water from the chilled serving glass. Using a julep or fine strainer, double-strain the stirred mixture into the chilled coupe or into a rocks glass over a large ice cube if preferred.
Express orange oil
Hold the orange peel over the glass, bend it to express the oils by giving it a firm twist skin-side down over the drink, then wipe the rim with the peel and drop it in or discard per preference.
