Coffee Base

Method

Coffee Base

1

Brew coffee

Brew 1.25 cups of very strong coffee using your preferred method (espresso-strength drip or French press). The beverage should be hot and concentrated so the flavors show through the cream.

2

If the coffee is too strong or too hot for serving, add up to 1/4 cup hot water to adjust strength and serve temperature. Stir gently to combine.

Cream & Sweetener

3

Prepare the brown sugar syrup by warming equal parts brown sugar and water until sugar dissolves. Use 2 tablespoons warmed syrup and stir into the hot coffee until fully dissolved.

4

Spoon 1/2 cup lightly sweetened whipped cream into a bowl and whisk briefly to a soft-pipe consistency (soft peaks). The cream should be pourable but hold some shape so it floats on the coffee.

Irish-Flavored Nonalcoholic Components

5

Stir 2 teaspoons of the nonalcoholic Irish-style whiskey alternative (or 2 tsp malted barley syrup) and 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract into the sweetened hot coffee. Taste and adjust: add up to 1 more teaspoon of whiskey alternative if you prefer a stronger malt/vanilla note.

Assembly & Garnish

6

Preheat a heatproof Irish coffee glass or tall mug by filling it with hot water for 30 seconds, then discard the water and dry the glass.

7

Pour the flavored, sweetened hot coffee into the warmed glass, leaving about 3/4 inch (2 cm) of headspace at the top for the cream layer.

8

Using the back of a warm spoon held just above the coffee surface, gently spoon or pour the whipped cream so it floats on top of the coffee, creating a distinct cream layer.

9

Lightly grate a pinch (about 1/8 tsp) of fresh nutmeg over the cream. Optionally place 2–3 whole coffee beans on the cream as a finishing touch.
