Method

Cocktail

  1. 1

Prepare Demerara syrup (optional, makes ~8 oz)

If you don't have Demerara syrup on hand, combine equal parts (by weight) Demerara sugar and hot water. Stir until dissolved and cool. For a slightly richer syrup, use 2:1 sugar to water. Use 0.5 oz of syrup for this cocktail. Skip this step if using raw Demerara sugar directly.

  2. 2

    Preheat glass

If serving the cocktail warm: briefly rinse and warm a rocks or coupe glass with hot water, then discard water. If serving chilled/on the rocks: chill the glass in the freezer for 5–10 minutes or fill with ice while preparing the drink and discard before serving.

  3. 3

    Combine and chill

Add Stoli Vanilla Vodka (1.5 oz), Mr. Black Coffee Liqueur (1 oz), freshly brewed espresso (1 oz, hot) and Demerara syrup (0.5 oz) into a cocktail shaker. Fill the shaker with ice (about 4 large cubes) to chill and dilute.

  4. 4

    Shake

Shake vigorously for 12–15 seconds. The goal is to chill the mixture quickly and create a light foam from the espresso.

  5. 5

    Strain and serve

Double-strain the cocktail into the prepared glass (use a fine mesh strainer if you want to catch espresso solids and achieve a smoother texture). If serving warm, skip the ice and simply combine ingredients in a preheated mixing vessel and stir gently, then pour.

  6. 6

    Garnish

Lightly dust the top with a pinch of Demerara sugar or grate a little dark chocolate over the foam for aroma and presentation. Serve immediately.

  7. 7

    Notes on proportions and variations

Adjust Demerara syrup to taste: increase to 0.75–1 oz for sweeter profiles. For a creamier version, float 0.5–1 oz of lightly whipped heavy cream on top instead of the sugar garnish. To make an iced variation, build in a rocks glass over fresh ice and stir gently instead of shaking with hot espresso.
