Method
For the Calamari
- 1
Prepare the Dry Batter
In a large bowl, combine all-purpose flour, cornstarch, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and paprika. Mix well to create a dry batter.
- 2
- 3
Heat the Oil
Heat vegetable oil in a deep skillet or fryer to 375°F (190°C).
- 4
Coat the Calamari
Dip each calamari ring first into the wet batter, allowing excess to drip off, then coat it with the dry batter. Shake off any excess flour.
- 5
Fry the Calamari
Carefully place the coated calamari rings into the hot oil in batches, avoiding crowding the pan. Fry for 2-3 minutes or until golden brown.
- 6
Drain the Calamari
Using a slotted spoon, remove the fried calamari from the oil and place them on a plate lined with paper towels to absorb excess oil.
For the Marinara Sauce
- 7
- 8
Add the Tomatoes and Seasonings
Add the canned crushed tomatoes, oregano, basil, salt, and black pepper to the saucepan. Stir well to combine.
- 9
Simmer the Sauce
Bring the sauce to a simmer and let it cook for about 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- 10
Finish the Marinara Sauce
Once the sauce thickens to your desired consistency, remove it from heat and set aside.
