Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Chill glass

Place a martini or coupe glass in the freezer for 5–10 minutes or fill it with ice water while you prepare the cocktail to ensure the drink stays cold.

  2. 2

    Measure spirits

Using a jigger or measuring spoon, measure 3 tablespoons gin, 1 tablespoon vodka, and 1/2 tablespoon Lillet blanc (or dry vermouth).

Mixing

  1. 3

    Combine and shake

Add a generous amount of ice to a cocktail shaker (or to a mixing glass if you prefer stirring). Pour in the gin, vodka, and Lillet blanc. If you prefer the classic Vesper texture, vigorously shake for about 10–15 seconds until the outside of the shaker is very cold and slightly frosted. (Stirring yields a smoother, clearer drink; shake for a colder, slightly more aerated Vesper.)

  2. 4

    Strain

Discard the ice or water from the chilled serving glass. Using a strainer, double-strain the cocktail into the chilled glass to remove small ice shards for a clean presentation.

Garnish & Serve

  1. 5

Express the lemon peel over the top of the drink by holding it with the outer rind toward the surface and giving it a firm squeeze to release oils. Optionally, run the peel around the glass rim, then drop the peel into the cocktail or lay it on the rim as a garnish.

  2. 6

Serve immediately. The classic Vesper is served straight up (no ice) and enjoyed cold.
