Method

Cocktail

  1. 1

    Pull espresso

Pull a fresh shot of espresso (about 1 oz) immediately before making the cocktail. Allow it to rest for 10–20 seconds so it cools just slightly but still warm — this helps create a good crema when shaking.

  2. 2

    Prepare shaker

Add 1 cup of ice to a cocktail shaker to chill and slightly dilute the drink while shaking.

  3. 3

    Combine ingredients

Into the shaker, pour 2 oz vodka, 1 oz freshly pulled espresso, 0.5 oz Irish cream, 0.5 oz coffee liqueur (if using), and 0.25 oz simple syrup (if using).

  4. 4

    Dry shake (optional)

For a silkier, foamier crema: before adding ice, you can dry shake (shake without ice) the espresso, vodka and liqueurs for 10–12 seconds. Then add ice and continue to the next step. If you skip dry shake, proceed directly to the next step.

  5. 5

    Shake

Secure the shaker and shake vigorously with ice for 12–18 seconds until the outside of the shaker becomes very cold and a thick, velvety foam forms.

  6. 6

    Double strain and serve

Double-strain the cocktail through a Hawthorne or fine tea strainer into a chilled coupe or martini glass to remove ice chips and produce a smooth drink with a crema on top.

Garnish

  1. 7

Place three whole espresso beans gently on the surface of the foam in a triangular arrangement. Serve immediately.
