Cocktail
Optional — for a richer finish
Method
Cocktail
- 1
Chill glass
Place an old-fashioned glass in the freezer for a few minutes or fill it with ice and water while you prepare the drink to chill and slightly dilute the glass.
- 2
Add ingredients to mixing glass
In a mixing glass or large mixing tin, combine 2 oz rye whiskey, 0.5 oz Amaro Montenegro, 0.25 oz simple syrup, 2 dashes Angostura bitters and 1 dash orange bitters.
- 3
Stir with ice
Fill the mixing glass with large cubed ice. Stir briskly but smoothly for about 20–30 seconds (15–20 full turns) until the mixture is well chilled and slightly diluted — the spoon should feel cold to the touch and the liquid slightly viscous.
- 4
Prepare serving glass
Dump the chilling ice water from the old-fashioned glass (if used) and place a large ice cube or sphere in the glass.
- 5
Strain
Double-strain the stirred cocktail into the prepared old-fashioned glass over the large ice cube using a Hawthorne or julep strainer (a single fine strain is acceptable).
- 6
Garnish — express orange oil
Take an orange peel and, with the outer skin facing the drink, hold it about 2–3 inches above the glass and give it a firm twist to express the oils over the surface. Then rub the peel around the rim and drop it into the glass as garnish. Optionally add a maraschino cherry on a pick.
- 7
Optional finishing touch
If using, add 1/2 tsp heavy cream (a bar spoon) to the stirred drink before straining for a silkier mouthfeel, or skip for a classic old-fashioned texture.
- 8
Serve
Serve immediately. Sip slowly to appreciate the rye backbone rounded by the bitter-sweet herbal notes of Amaro Montenegro and the bitters' complexity.
