Cocktail

Method

Cocktail

  1. 1

    Combine

If using a mixing glass: add 2.25 oz bourbon, 0.5 oz demerara simple syrup, and 3 dashes Angostura bitters into the mixing glass.

  2. 2

    Stir / Chill

Fill the mixing glass with ice and stir with a bar spoon for 20–30 seconds (about 15–20 full turns) until well chilled and slightly diluted. If you prefer building in the serving glass, add ingredients directly to a rocks glass with ice and stir 10–15 seconds to chill and integrate.

  3. 3

    Prepare glass

Place a single large ice cube in a chilled rocks glass (or keep the stirred mixture in the mixing glass to strain over the large cube).

  4. 4

    Strain / Pour

Strain the chilled cocktail over the large ice cube in the rocks glass (or simply leave if built in the glass).

  5. 5

    Express orange oil

Hold a fresh piece of orange peel over the drink, skin side down. Give the peel a sharp squeeze or fold to express 3 strong bursts of orange oil across the surface of the cocktail. Rub the peel's rim lightly on the glass if desired.

  6. 6

    Garnish & Serve

Drop the expressed orange peel into the glass as a garnish (or set on the rim). Serve immediately.

Optional / Make Demerara Simple Syrup

  1. 7

To make 2:1 demerara simple syrup (richer, cozier sweetness): combine 2 cups demerara sugar and 1 cup water in a small saucepan. Heat gently, stirring until the sugar fully dissolves. Remove from heat and cool. Store refrigerated in a sealed container for up to 2 weeks. Use 0.5 oz in the cocktail as specified.
