Method
Preparation
- 1
Select and wash
Choose 6 large, firm organic navel oranges with heavy, bright skin. Rinse each orange under cool running water and gently scrub with your hands or a soft brush to remove wax or residue. Pat dry with a clean towel.
- 2
Roll oranges
On a clean countertop, firmly roll each orange under the heel of your hand to soften and loosen the juice inside. This helps maximize yield.
Juicing
- 3
Cut and juice
Slice each orange in half crosswise. Use a citrus juicer (manual reamer or electric) to extract juice from all halves into a bowl or pitcher. If using a manual reamer, press and twist firmly; if using an electric juicer, follow the manufacturer's instructions.
- 4
Strain (optional)
For smoother juice, pour the freshly squeezed orange juice through a fine-mesh sieve or cheesecloth into a clean pitcher to remove pulp and seeds. Use a spoon to press pulp against the sieve to extract remaining liquid. If you prefer pulpy orange juice, skip this step.
- 5
Adjust texture
If the juice is very thick or intensely sweet, stir in 1/4 cup (60 ml) filtered cold water to slightly dilute and balance flavor. Taste and decide whether to add optional sweetener or lemon.
- 6
Sweeten or brighten (optional)
If desired, add up to 1 teaspoon granulated sugar or 1 teaspoon simple syrup and 1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice to brighten the flavor. Stir until sugar dissolves completely. Adjust to taste, adding no more than 1–2 teaspoons total.
Serve
- 7
Chill and serve
Fill two glasses with 3 ice cubes each (or chill the juice beforehand). Pour the orange juice evenly between the glasses. Garnish each glass with an orange wheel or twist and a mint sprig if desired. Serve immediately for best freshness.
- 8
Storage: Refrigerate any leftover juice in a covered pitcher or airtight container for up to 48 hours. Stir gently before serving; fresh-squeezed juice is best consumed within the first day for peak flavor and vitamin content.
