Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Select beans and equipment

Choose a fresh bag of organic whole-bean medium roast coffee. Gather a burr grinder, kettle, scale or measuring tools, timer, coffee brewer (drip coffee maker, pour-over cone, or French press), filter (if required), and a carafe or mug.

  2. 2

    Measure and heat water

Measure 3 cups (about 710 ml) of filtered water for brewing. Reserve about 1/2 cup (120 ml) of filtered water to preheat the carafe or kettle. Heat the water to just below boiling: 195–205°F (90–96°C). If you don't have a thermometer, bring water to a boil and let it sit 30 seconds.

  3. 3

    Preheat

Pour the reserved 1/2 cup (120 ml) hot water into the carafe or mug and swirl to warm it, then discard the water. This helps maintain extraction temperature.

Grinding

  1. 4

    Grind beans

Weigh or measure 0.33 cup (about 56–60 grams) of whole beans for a 3-cup brew (approx. 1:12 coffee-to-water ratio). For a single cup, use ~0.11 cup (18–20 g). Grind to the appropriate size for your brewing method: medium-coarse for drip or pour-over (similar to sea salt), coarse for French press, medium for automatic drip machines. Grind immediately before brewing for best flavor.

Brewing

  1. 5

    Prepare filter and coffee bed

If using a paper filter (pour-over or drip), place it in the dripper and rinse it with hot water to remove papery taste and preheat the vessel; discard rinse water. Add the freshly ground coffee to the filter or coffee basket and level the grounds.

  2. 6

Bloom (for pour-over or manual drip)

Start a timer. Pour just enough hot water (about twice the weight of coffee; ~120 ml) evenly over the grounds to saturate them and allow to bloom for 30–45 seconds. This releases trapped CO2 and improves extraction.

  3. 7

    Finish pouring

Continue pouring in slow, concentric circles (for pour-over) or let the machine pour automatically until you reach a total of 3 cups (710 ml) of brewed coffee. Aim to finish pouring within 2:30–3:30 minutes for pour-over and drip. For French press, pour all hot water over grounds, stir gently, cover, and steep 4 minutes before pressing.

  4. 8

    Automatic drip or espresso machines

If using an automatic drip coffee maker, add grounds to the basket, ensure the water reservoir has 3 cups (710 ml), and start the brew cycle. For espresso, use finely ground beans and an appropriate espresso recipe—this recipe is optimized for drip/pour-over/French press styles.

Finishing

  1. 9

    Serve

Once brewed, immediately transfer coffee to the preheated carafe or serve in warmed mugs to preserve temperature and flavor. Add sugar or milk to taste if desired.

  2. 10

    Storage and notes

Use brewed coffee within 30–60 minutes for best taste. Store unused fresh whole beans in an airtight container in a cool, dark place and grind only what you need. Adjust coffee-to-water ratio to preference: stronger (1:15) or lighter (1:13).
