Method
Bagel & Toasting
- 1
Prepare bagel
If your bagel is whole, slice it horizontally with a serrated knife to create two even halves. If already sliced, separate halves.
- 2
Optional buttering: Lightly spread 1 teaspoon of butter on the cut sides if you like a richer, golden toast.
- 3
Toast: Place the bagel halves cut-side up in a toaster or under a broiler. Toast on medium until the cut surfaces are golden-brown and crisp (about 2–4 minutes in a toaster, 3–6 minutes under broiler depending on intensity). Watch closely to avoid burning.
Cream Cheese Spread
- 4
Soften and mix
If the cream cheese is cold, let it sit at room temperature 10–15 minutes or microwave for 5–7 seconds to soften slightly so it spreads easily.
- 5
Combine: In a small bowl, place 2 tablespoons of softened cream cheese. Add a pinch of salt, a pinch of black pepper and the chopped chives (if using). Stir until smooth and evenly mixed. Taste and adjust seasoning.
- 6
Spread: Using a butter knife or small spatula, spread the prepared cream cheese evenly over the warm toasted cut sides of the bagel. The warmth will slightly melt the cheese for a creamy texture.
Garnish (optional)
- 7
Top: Arrange tomato slices and red onion rings on one or both halves if desired. Sprinkle capers and fresh dill or parsley over the cream cheese for bright flavor.
- 8
Serve: Close the bagel (if you prefer a sandwich) or serve open-faced. Serve immediately while the bagel is warm and the cream cheese is soft.
