In a saucepan, heat the granulated sugar over medium heat, stirring constantly until it melts and turns golden brown. Slowly add the heavy cream and butter, stirring until smooth. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract and salt.

Pour the cake batter over the apple and pecan topping in the cake pan, spreading it evenly.
