Method
Cocktail
Chill the glass
Place a chilled rocks glass in the freezer for a few minutes or fill it with ice and cold water while you prepare the drink. This keeps the cocktail properly cold.
Build and stir
Add 2 oz Maker's Mark bourbon, 0.75 oz sweet vermouth, and 2 dashes aromatic bitters into a mixing glass. Fill the mixing glass with ice (large cubes preferred). Stir gently but thoroughly for about 20–30 seconds (15–20 full rotations) until the mixture is well chilled and slightly diluted.
Prepare the glass
Discard the ice/water from the chilled rocks glass if you used it to chill. Place one large ice cube or sphere into the glass.
Strain
Using a julep or Hawthorne strainer, strain the stirred cocktail from the mixing glass into the prepared rocks glass over the single large ice cube.
Garnish and finish
Express the oils of an orange twist over the drink by holding the twist skin-side down above the glass and giving it a quick pinch to release the oils. Rub the twist around the rim if desired, then drop it into the cocktail. Optionally add a cocktail cherry on a pick. Serve immediately.
Optional/Tools
If you prefer a slightly drier, stiffer cocktail, reduce the sweet vermouth to 0.5 oz. For a more aromatic profile, substitute a portion (0.25 oz) of sweet vermouth with dry vermouth or add a third dash of bitters.
