Method

Prep

1

Chill glass

Place a coupe or old fashioned glass in the freezer for 5–10 minutes or fill with ice water while you prepare the cocktail to ensure the drink stays cold.

2

Make simple syrup (if needed)

Combine equal parts granulated sugar and hot water (for this recipe, 1/2 oz syrup is needed; make about 2 fl oz by dissolving 1 tablespoon sugar in 1 tablespoon hot water). Stir until sugar is fully dissolved and cool before using.

Mix

3

Add 2 oz Jim Beam bourbon, 0.75 oz fresh lemon juice, 0.5 oz fresh orange juice, 0.5 oz simple syrup, and 2 dashes Angostura bitters into a cocktail shaker.

4

Fill the shaker with ice (about 1 cup) to near the top and secure the lid.

5

Shake vigorously for 12–15 seconds until the shaker feels very cold and you see condensation on the outside.

Serve

6

Discard ice or water from the chilled glass. Double-strain the shaken cocktail into the chilled coupe or an old fashioned glass filled with fresh large ice (if you prefer it on the rocks) using a Hawthorne strainer and a fine-mesh strainer to remove small ice shards and pulp.

7

Express the oils from an orange twist over the drink by holding the twist skin-side down about 3–4 inches above the surface and giving it a quick squeeze to release the oils, then run the peel around the glass rim and drop it into the drink. Optionally add a lemon wheel or a lemon peel for aroma.

8

Serve immediately.
