Cocktail Base
Fig Simple Syrup (makes ~1 cup)

Method
Fig Simple Syrup (prepare at least 1 hour ahead)

Combine and simmer
Place the halved figs, sugar, and water in a small saucepan. Add the lemon zest. Bring to a gentle simmer over medium heat, stirring occasionally so the sugar dissolves. Reduce heat to low and simmer for 8–10 minutes, until the figs are softened and the liquid is fragrant and slightly thickened.

- 3
Strain and finish
Strain the syrup through a fine-mesh sieve or cheesecloth into a clean jar, pressing on the solids to extract as much syrup as possible. Discard solids. If using, stir in the optional splash of brandy or aged rum. Cool to room temperature, then refrigerate. Syrup will keep 2 weeks refrigerated.
Cocktail Assembly

- 5
Build and shake
In a cocktail shaker, add 2 oz gin, 0.75 oz fresh lemon juice, 0.75 oz fig simple syrup, and 0.25 oz dry vermouth. Add a generous handful of ice (about 1 cup). Secure the lid and shake vigorously for 12–15 seconds until well-chilled and the shaker is frosty.
- 6
Double strain
Discard ice or water from the chilled glass if used. Double strain the cocktail into the chilled coupe or rock glass using the shaker’s strainer and a fine-mesh sieve to remove small ice shards and any fig pulp for a clear, silky drink.
- 7
Garnish and serve
Garnish with a fresh fig slice set on the rim or floated on the surface and a lemon twist expressed over the drink (run the twist around the rim, then drop or set aside). Serve immediately.
