Method
Coffee Base
Brew and concentrate
Brew 2 cups of very strong espresso. If you don't have an espresso machine, brew a strong dark coffee (use about double the normal grounds). While still hot, stir in 1 tablespoon instant espresso powder if using to intensify the flavor. Allow the coffee to cool to near room temperature (about 30–45 minutes).
Sugar Syrup
Make simple syrup
Combine 1.5 cups granulated sugar and 3/4 cup water in a small saucepan. Heat over medium, stirring constantly until the sugar fully dissolves and the mixture just reaches a gentle simmer. Do not boil vigorously. Once clear and slightly thickened, remove from heat and let cool to warm (10–15 minutes).
Combine & Infuse
Add alcohol and flavor
Pour in 2 cups vodka and 1/4 cup dark rum or brandy (if using). Add the split vanilla bean (scrape seeds into the mixture and toss in the pod) or 1 tablespoon vanilla extract. Add 1 tablespoon coffee beans and a pinch (about 1 teaspoon) of salt to amplify flavors. Stir to combine.
Initial rest
Cover the mixture and let it rest at room temperature for 24 hours to marry flavors, stirring once or twice. If you prefer a stronger coffee profile, steep up to 48 hours, then strain.
Clarify & Bottle
Strain and clarify
After infusion, strain the liqueur through a fine-mesh sieve lined with cheesecloth or a coffee filter to remove grounds, vanilla pod pieces, and beans. If the liquid is cloudy, refrigerate for several hours and decant off any sediment, or filter again through a paper filter.
Adjust sweetness and proof
Taste the liqueur. If it's too strong or bitter, add a little more simple syrup (in 2–4 tablespoon increments). If too sweet, add a splash more vodka. Adjust until balanced.
Bottle and age
Transfer the strained liqueur to sterilized bottles or jars, seal tightly, and store in a cool, dark place. For best flavor, age at least 2 weeks before using; flavors will continue to meld and mellow for up to 3 months. Refrigeration is optional — it may thicken slightly when chilled.
Serving
Serve suggestions
Serve neat over ice, in espresso martinis, poured over ice cream, or used in cocktails. Shake or swirl before serving if any separation has occurred. Garnish with a few whole coffee beans if desired.
