Pasta

Method

Cooking Pasta

  1. 1

    Boil Water

In a large pot, bring 4 cups of water to a boil over high heat.

  2. 2

    Add Salt

Once the water is boiling, add 1 tablespoon of salt to the water.

  3. 3

    Cook Pasta

Add 2 cups of pasta to the boiling water. Stir occasionally and cook according to the package instructions until al dente, usually about 8-10 minutes.

  4. 4

    Drain Pasta

Once cooked, drain the pasta in a colander and set aside. Reserve a cup of pasta water for later use if needed.

Making Tomato Sauce

  1. 5

    Heat Olive Oil

In a large skillet, heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil over medium heat.

  2. 6

    Sauté Garlic

Add the minced garlic (3 cloves) to the skillet and sauté for about 1 minute, until fragrant but not browned.

  3. 7

    Add Tomatoes and Seasonings

Pour in the 28 ounces of canned crushed tomatoes. Stir in 1 tablespoon of dried basil, 1 tablespoon of dried oregano, 1 teaspoon of salt, 1 teaspoon of black pepper, and 1 teaspoon of sugar.

  4. 8

    Simmer Sauce

Reduce the heat to low and let the sauce simmer for about 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.

  5. 9

    Finish Sauce

Just before serving, stir in the chopped fresh basil leaves (1 tablespoon) for added flavor.

Combining Pasta and Sauce

  1. 10

    Mix Together

Add the drained pasta to the skillet with the sauce. Toss to coat the pasta evenly with the sauce. If the sauce is too thick, add a little reserved pasta water to reach the desired consistency.

  2. 11

    Serve

Serve the pasta and sauce hot, garnished with additional fresh basil if desired.
