Tea Preparation

Method

Tea Preparation

  1. 1

    Boil water

Heat 8 oz (1 cup) of fresh cold water in a kettle, saucepan, or electric kettle until it reaches the appropriate temperature: just boiling (212°F / 100°C) for black tea, around 175–185°F (80–85°C) for green tea, or just-boiled for most herbal teas. If using an electric kettle without temperature control, bring to a full boil for black/herbal tea; allow to rest 1–2 minutes before pouring for green tea.

  2. 2

    Pre-warm cup (optional)

Pour a small amount of the hot water into your cup, swirl briefly, then discard. This helps keep the brew hotter while steeping.

  3. 3

    Steep tea

Place 1 tea bag into the cup. Pour the remaining hot water (about 8 oz) over the tea bag, fully submerging it. Start the timer and steep for the recommended time: 3–5 minutes for black tea (3 for lighter, 5 for stronger), 2–3 minutes for green tea, 5–7 minutes for most herbal teas. Avoid oversteeping to prevent bitterness.

  4. 4

    Remove tea bag

When the steep time is complete, lift the tea bag out of the cup and gently press it once against the cup rim with a spoon to squeeze out a little liquid if desired. Dispose of the used tea bag (compost if possible).

  5. 5

    Add extras

If desired, add 1–2 tsp sweetener (start with 1 tsp and adjust to taste), 1–2 tablespoons milk for milk tea, or a slice of lemon. Stir with a teaspoon to combine. Taste and adjust sweetness or milk.

  6. 6

    Serve

Serve the tea immediately while warm. If preparing iced tea, allow to cool slightly then pour over ice.

Tools

  1. 7

Use the kettle or saucepan to heat water to the appropriate temperature. Use a timer or clock to track steeping time. Use a teaspoon to stir in milk or sweetener and to press the tea bag against the cup rim when removing.
