Method
Espresso
- 1
Dose and Tamp
Weigh 18 g of freshly roasted coffee and grind to a fine espresso setting. Distribute evenly in the portafilter and tamp with 30–40 lbs (13–18 kg) of pressure to create a level puck.
- 2
Brew
Lock the portafilter in an espresso machine preheated to brew temperature. Brew a single or double shot aiming for about 40 ml of espresso in 25–30 seconds. Adjust grind or dose to hit time and yield.
Hot Water
- 3
Heat Water
Heat 200 ml of filtered water to 85–95°C (185–203°F). If you are making a larger Americano ('any size'), scale the hot water amount to taste: small 120–180 ml, medium 200–240 ml, large 300–360 ml. The recipe uses 200 ml as a baseline.
- 4
Combine
Pour the hot water into the serving cup first (this preserves crema and temperature balance), then gently pour the 40 ml espresso into the hot water. Pouring espresso into hot water (rather than water into espresso) will keep more crema intact and produce a balanced extraction flavor.
- 5
Adjust
Taste the Americano. Add sugar or simple syrup to taste (start with 1 tsp), or add up to 30 ml milk/cream if you prefer a creamier cup. Stir gently to combine.
- 6
Serve
Serve immediately while hot. If making multiple sizes, adjust hot water and espresso ratio to maintain balance (roughly 1:5 espresso to water by volume for a standard Americano).
