Classic Cocktail Base (per drink)
Citrus & Sweeteners
Bitters & Aromatics
Alternative Spirit Options (swap for gin)
Method
Preparation
- 1
- 2
Measure ingredients
Measure 2 oz gin (or your chosen spirit), 0.5 oz dry vermouth, 0.5 oz fresh lemon juice and 0.25 oz simple syrup. Have bitters and garnishes ready.
Mixing & Dilution
- 3
Build in a mixing glass
Add 6 ice cubes to a mixing glass. Pour in the gin (or alternative spirit), dry vermouth, lemon juice and simple syrup. Add 2 dashes of Angostura bitters.
- 4
Stir and dilute
Stir the mixture briskly for 20–30 seconds (about 15–20 full turns) until the outside of the mixing glass is very cold. This chills and dilutes the drink to proper balance.
Finishing & Garnish
- 5
Strain
Discard the ice or water from the chilled glass. Double-strain the cocktail into the chilled coupe or martini glass using a Hawthorne and fine mesh strainer to remove small ice shards and any pulp from the lemon juice.
- 6
Express and garnish
Hold an orange twist over the drink and give it a firm squeeze to express oils over the surface, then run the twist around the rim and drop it into the glass. Optionally slap a mint sprig between your palms to release aroma and rest it on the edge.
- 7
Serve
Serve immediately. Recommend serving one cocktail per recipe quantities. Provide a small water carafe or snack to accompany.
